As of January 2012, temporary exhibits complementing the Lacombe Public Library's award winning History Lecture Series will be installed at the Flatiron Museum replacing some of the exhibits currently on display. The exhibits are being organized by the Lacombe & District Historical Society in collaboration with Lacombe’s Mary C. Moore library, the Lacombe Police Force, the local girl guides, in addition to other groups, businesses and individuals in the community.

Each exhibit will be unveiled at the Flatiron Museum on the same day that the accompanying history Lecture is held at the Lacombe Memorial Centre; January 26^th, February 23^rd, March 29^th. The Flatiron Museum will be from 1pm – 7pm on these three days so that individuals may view the displays prior to attending each lecture.

THE LACOMBE & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY is very excited to host two special events on Saturday September 24th, 2011.

We would like to extend this notice about our HERITAGE TOUR at 1:00pm and invite everyone to attend the very special designation ceremony that is being held at the Blacksmith Shop Museum in Lacombe at 3:30pm.

Itinerary of events for Saturday, September 24th:

1) Lacombe Heritage Tour
1:00pm to 3:30pm

A very special guided tour of local historical sites in Lacombe. The tour begins at the Flatiron Museum and Interpretive Centre at 1:00pm on Sept. 24^th. Transportation between the historical sites is provided.Participants will receive an original publication that has been specially produced for this tour.

2 – St Cyprian’s Anglican Church

3 – Federal Research Centre & Ag. Pavilion

2) 2011 Lacombe Blacksmith Shop Designation Ceremony

This special public event is being hosted to celebrate the Blacksmith Shop Museum’s designation as a provincial historic resource by the Government of Alberta. The celebration will include blacksmithing demonstrations, live music, refreshments and more. Attendance is free.

This month, the museum gals saw several historic sites in Red Deer, and one in Innisfail. The day was a blast! As museum/tourism assistants, we believe that it is important to inform visitors of other sites to see in communities not far from ours! Here are some of our favourite moments!

Due to the number of residents and visitors that were in the city for Canada Day and Lacombe days, our local Museums saw a large number of visitors during the month of July. The combined attendance at the Michener House Museum, the Flatiron Interpretive Centre, and the Blacksmith Shop Museum reached over 1,000 visitors for the month of July alone. Marie Péron, the Museums’ new Executive Director since May, looks forward to a busy fall with events and programs that will continue to draw in visitors into the Museums. Historical Society Pancake Breakfast

The Lacombe & District Historical Society hosted its annual fundraising Pancake Breakfast on Saturday July 16^th during Lacombe Days. The breakfast was a great success due to large attendance, live music and of course tasty pancakes and sausages. Many local residents came out to enjoy the festivities as well as visitors who were in town celebrating Lacombe Days. The historical society thanks everyone who came and showed their support – we hope that you had a good time.

A big thank you goes out to all of the dedicated volunteers who helped make the Pancake Breakfast the success that it was. Live music performed by Edna Beck, Shirley and Fred Doberstein, Carrol and Murray Gordon, Don and Betty Monroe, and George Sim entertained the hungry crowd and even got some people up and dancing after eating their breakfast.

Pancakes and Food for Thought at Lacombe’s Museums

Despite the fact that it is Alberta’s newest city, Lacombe’s identity is very much shaped by its love of the past. Locals and visitors alike come to the museums in Lacombe to further their appetites for local history and see how the city has transformed over the past century. Lacombe is home to the Michener House Museum and Archives, the Flatiron Museum and Interpretive Centre, and the Blacksmith Shop Museum. On Canada Day, nearly 130 individuals visited the Museums and participated in FREE tours of the museums, walking tours downtown and a blacksmithing demonstration over at the Blacksmith Shop.

For this year’s upcoming Lacombe Days there will be a fundraising pancake breakfast with musical entertainment at the Michener House Museum on Saturday, July 16^th from 8:00am to 10:30am. All proceeds from the breakfast will go to the not-for-profit Lacombe & District Historical Society which operates the Museums. The very popular Blacksmith Shop Museum will be open to the public again from 11:00am – 3:00pm on the Saturday and will be showcasing various blacksmithing tools and techniques. Entrance to the Museums is free. Visit during Lacombe Days and enjoy delicious pancakes with a side of history.

The successful candidate will report to and assist the Executive Director of the Michener House Museum with duties relating to the daily operations of the Museum and Archive. Job Description

Job title: Museum Assistant

Work Hours: 35 hours a week

Term of contract: Beginning of June to end of August, 2011

Job description: This position reports to the Executive Director (ED) of the Museum. The incumbent will assist the ED with duties relating to the daily operations of the Michener House Museum and Archive.

Duties include:

- Greeting and providing information to visitors

- Providing tours of the Michener House Museum and Archives, Blacksmith Shop and collaborating with the Tourism Assistant at The Interpretive Centre in the Flatiron Building

- Assisting ED with the delivery of programs and activities

- Daily housekeeping (includes tasks such as dusting, cleaning, taking out garbage)

- Attending and assisting at events put on by the Lacombe & District and Historical Society

- Assisting the ED with office related duties such as answering phone calls, checking emails, keeping statistics and completing reports

- Doing some accessioning for the archives

- Assisting with research and special projects under the leadership of the ED or members of the historical society

Qualifications: - Experience working in customer service or working directly with members of the public

- Telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills

- Proficient at using Microsoft Office Suite

- Works well independently

- Follows directions

- Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a post-secondary education and that display an interest in History, Culture or Education

- Currently a student

Hello everyone,

The Michener House Museum will be open for the 2011 season as of Tuesday May 24th.

If you are planning a tour in the next week or two, it is a good idea to call ahead and ensure that the museum will be open. The Lacombe & District Historical Society, which runs the Museum, is in the process of hiring a Museum Assistant who will assist the Executive Director for the summer and hopefully start work very soon.

The Lacombe & District Historical Society has hired Marie Péron to be the new Executive Director for Michener House Museum. Marie is an art historian and is originally from Montreal. She is fully bilingual and has been living in Lacombe for over a year. She looks forward to providing engaging tours and fun activities for everyone at the Museum this summer!

Heritage Home Tour

The Lacombe and District's Historical Society's annual Heritage Home Tour is fast approaching. The event will take place Saturday, September 18. More details will be forthcoming. Tickets for the tour are $25 per individual. Call the Michener House Museum to reserve a ticket.

The Picture Savenger Hunt at the museum will be happening throughout the summer months. If you can place this picture when you visit the museum, you get a complimentary Michener House Museum package which includes: Lacombe Walking Tour Booklet, Michener House Museum pin, Lacombe & District Historical Society 2010 Calender
Once the picture has been varified by a visitor, a new picture will be put up and the search begins anew!

A beautiful donation!

It was dreary and rainy in Lacombe today, but the smiles of Al and Jennie Machacek visiting from their hometown, Lethbridge, made the museum a brighter place. Jennie donated to the museum her 126th crocheted rag rug, which will be displayed upstairs beside the Michener bed. Thank you Jennie and Al for the wonderful visit!

There's quite a bit of information available on the web about making crocheted rag rugs. There is a variety of cloth materials that can be used to make up the rug as well. The donated rug was made from bed sheets that were found at garage sales. It is truly a piece of practical art!
